Breeding and raising alpacas is the fastest
growing livestock business in America and the show circuit is a key way
breeders measure their animals. Breeders bring their livestock from all
corners of New Mexico and surrounding states for the State Fair Show.
Potential alpaca buyers travel from all over the country to attend this
unique show, to learn about, and purchase these unique animals.
Since alpacas were first imported to the
United States in the early 1980’s, the North American alpaca population has
grown to more than 100,000 and nearly 900 alpacas in New Mexico. With its
temperate winter, dry heat summers, and high altitude our southwest state is
very similar to their indigenous high Andes climate making New Mexico ideal
for alpaca ranching. It is a natural that the NM State Fair proudly hosts an
alpaca show, now for the sixth year. |
